Meet the Vancouver Island Leadership Council

Members of this focused group serve as visible advocates of Make-A-Wish on Vancouver Island by effectively articulating the mission of the organization to potential donors and supporters. The role of a Leadership Council member is to provide guidance and assistance in growth strategy and the identification and cultivation of funding prospects and partners. Council involvement, with limited, but high-quality time, is imperative. Membership is made up of respected leaders from across the community.

About our Chairperson

Walter Donald is the Chair of The Leadership Council for southern VancouverIsland. By day, he is the cofounder and corporate chair for The Executive network. He agreed to take on the responsibility with Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon's Vancouver Island Leadership Council for several reasons.

The first and most compelling reason to get involved, he says,  is that the "children (and their families) whose wishes are granted benefit immediately, and we know that the benefits endure for the rest of their lives."

There are many other reasons, as well. Volunteers, supporters, donors and participants in Make-A-Wish fundraising events know that their money, time and energy goes directly toward benefiting children and families in their local communities.

Leadership Council Members are eager to offer their support and involvement because the rewards are immediately obvious.  "A child's wish, which might seem to be impossible to fulfil," says Donald, "is fulfilled. The dream comes true.  The seemingly impossible is made possible. What could be more rewarding, more inspiring, or more worthwhile?"

Donald feels privileged to have been asked to take on this role and he feels the deepest gratitude to those in the community who have stepped up to serve on The Leadership Council, along with Make-A-Wish's Simone Conner, in helping to make Vancouver Island children's "impossible" wishes come true.

"MY wish," says Donald, "is that every critically ill child's wish will come true, and I believe that the people on Vancouver Island will make my wish come true."
