VICTORIA, BC. – The 4th annual UnWined fundraiser for Make-A-Wish, presented by Rite Self Storage, smashed its previous fundraising record by over double, bringing in its largest-ever donation of more than $130,000.
“We are truly grateful for the generosity of the community,” said Simone Conner, Vancouver Island Director for Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon. “We had a surprise element this year of a generous matching donation of $50,000 from Jo Campbell. That made a huge difference to our efforts.”
Campbell was born and raised in Victoria and said that it has always been important to her family to support the community in which they live.
“The community was very supportive when we started Thrifty Foods,” said Campbell, “and we built the culture of giving back to community into our company. I feel that family is so important, and Make-A-Wish allows these children who are critically ill—and their families—to receive an opportunity to experience some real joy; we were thrilled to support UnWined.”
UnWined is an event that brings together a variety of island-based brewers, distillers and wineries, as well as several food providers who set up tasting stations. Attendees eat and drink, as well as bid on silent auction items, take part in a live auction, and listen to the impact a wish has made for a local family with a child living with a critical illness. It’s fast become a notable event in Island circles.
“Attendees got a great evening of food and drink and Make-A-Wish was given the means to financially support wishes to kids right here on Vancouver Island,” said Conner. “What an incredible win-win.”
The event has grown significantly over its four years, but Conner says the event remains as an easy, accessible evening.
“We love our home at the University Club of Victoria,” said Conner. “We know that food and beverage events are popular here on Vancouver Island and we’re grateful that islanders are willing to come to this great venue to share their passion for drink, food and fundraising with us.”
Next year’s event will be on September 24th, 2020, once again at the University Club of Victoria. To view photos from the event, visit our Facebook page and to pre-register your interest, email Conner at firstname.lastname@example.org
